The Cal State Fullerton Titans women’s tennis team secured a spot in the 2024 Big West Women’s Tennis Championship Final with a commanding 4-1 victory over UC Davis in the semifinals at the Barnes Tennis Center.
With this win, the Titans (17-8) are making their second appearance ever in the Big West Championship match. Their previous entry was during the 2017-2018 season, under the leadership of Head Coach Dianne Matias and Assistant Coach Ellie Edles-Williams, who is now the head coach of the Cal Poly Mustangs, the Titans’ opponent in Saturday’s final.
Back in 2018, the Titans faced the University of Hawai’i and were defeated 4-2 in Indian Wells.
The Titans took an early lead by securing the doubles point against UC Davis. Josie Usereau and Sein Myoung dominated the No. 1 doubles match with a 6-1 victory, while Milena Gevorgyan and Seha Yu clinched a 7-5 win in the No. 3 doubles, giving the Titans a crucial advantage.
In singles play, Natalie Duffy and Mariia Nikitash extended the Titans’ lead to 3-0 with wins in the No. 3 and No. 6 singles matches, respectively. Although UC Davis managed to win one singles match, Sein Myoung’s victory in the No. 2 singles secured the Titans’ triumph with a final score of 4-1.
Having previously defeated Cal Poly in a close encounter, the Titans are prepared to face them again in the championship final after a hard-fought victory earlier this month. With their sights set on the title, the Titans are ready to showcase their talent and determination on the court.
