The Toronto Maple Leafs are nearing the selection of their 18th general manager, almost two weeks after parting ways with Kyle Dubas. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, it appears highly likely that Brad Treliving will be appointed as the new GM, although the team has not yet officially confirmed this. This news should come as no surprise to followers of Toronto’s search, as Treliving has been considered the leading candidate from the start.
Several potential candidates were mentioned as possible replacements for Dubas, but Treliving quickly emerged as the consensus favorite for this highly coveted front-office position. Insiders such as Dreger, Bally Sports’ Andy Strickland, and Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman have all indicated that Treliving was the frontrunner.
Friedman previously stated, “Brad Treliving is expected to visit Toronto this week for a meeting with the Maple Leafs. Of course, he won’t be the only candidate interviewed. There is significant interest in this job, but as the organization began exploring alternatives to Dubas, Treliving was highly regarded.”
Treliving previously served as the general manager of the Calgary Flames from 2014 to 2023, leading the team to the playoffs in five of his nine seasons. However, similar to the Maple Leafs, Calgary was unable to progress beyond the second round during Treliving’s tenure. He also had prior experience as an assistant general manager with the Arizona Coyotes.
More recently, Treliving has demonstrated a willingness to make bold moves, such as acquiring Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar from the Florida Panthers after it became apparent that star player Matthew Tkachuk would not re-sign with the Flames as a restricted free agent.
As Toronto fans eagerly anticipate changes and star center Auston Matthews hopes for a contract extension before July 1, it remains to be seen what strategies Treliving will employ for the team.
Meanwhile, Dubas is reportedly considering an offer to join the front office of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
