In an attempt to narrow the distance to Red Bull and address some of the major issues with their W14 car, Mercedes introduced a substantial upgrade package earlier in the season, specifically in Monaco. However, Red Bull has maintained their dominance and has yet to lose a race in the 2023 season.
Wolff stated in response to Autosport’s inquiry;
“I still maintain the belief, If I were to say that I don’t believe it anymore, then we might as well stop now and solely focus on next year’s car, settling for top 10 finishes.”
Despite the current gap between the teams, Wolff firmly believes that Mercedes can still catch up to Red Bull. When asked about Mercedes’ chances of beating Red Bull in terms of pace this season, Wolff expressed his unwavering belief in their ability to do so. He emphasized the need to continue working and not lose hope. Wolff acknowledged that there have been races where Mercedes performed well, citing Montreal as an example where the gap to Verstappen was only 10 seconds, which appeared more promising compared to the situation in Austria.
Wolff’s stance reflects the team’s determination to persistently work towards improvement and bounce back from challenging races. Rather than giving up, Mercedes aims to make the most of difficult situations and gradually close the gap to their competitors.
