A Wimbledon video is circulating of a young Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune playing doubles as teenagers, dominating their Croatian opponents. These two rising stars of tennis, both under the age of 21, will face each other in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, just days apart in age. Despite their rivalry, they have remained close friends since their first encounter at the age of 11.
Rune expressed his excitement about their upcoming match. Highlighting the significance of playing a quarter-final against a player of the same age and ranking. He acknowledged the impressive progress of young players in the sports. He looked forward to the match as a positive reflection of their achievements.
Both 20-year-olds, Alcaraz and Rune, may seem unlikely to derail Novak Djokovic. But Rune has already defeated Djokovic this season at the Italian Open. Alcaraz showcased his skills by defeating Matteo Berrettini in the previous round, setting up his quarter-final clash with Rune.
The two players pose a significant threat to Djokovic’s dominance in the tournament. Alcaraz was considered a strong contender for the French Open title. On the other hand Rune holds a psychological advantage over Djokovic with recent victories. However, repeating those victories on Djokovic’s favored surface might be more challenging.
Both Alcaraz and Rune are known for their exceptional running abilities and fondly remember their past doubles partnership at Les Petit As, a prestigious tournament for under-14 players. They reached the semi-finals together back then. Now, their target is set on competing against each other on Centre Court.
