Indian tennis players Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni received a last-minute entry into the main draw of Wimbledon 2023. Wimbledon is renowned as the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. It remains the only Grand Slam event played on grass courts. Bhambri and Myneni secured their place in the men’s doubles main draw. After Yibing Wu and Zhizhen Zhang withdrew due to Wu’s illness. This will be their debut appearance at Wimbledon. It will mark Myneni’s first participation in a main draw event at this grass court major.
In the first round, Bhambri and Myneni will face singles stars. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain and Adrian Mannarino of France. While Bhambri has previously competed in singles at Wimbledon. This will also be his first time participating in the doubles event. The 31-year-old recently achieved his first ATP tour title, in doubles, at the Mallorca Championships alongside South Africa’s Lloyd Harris. This victory has provided him with valuable match experience and confidence on the grass surface. Leading to a career-high doubles ranking of 58.
Bhambri and Myneni have already competed together in the first two Grand Slam tournaments of the year. While they suffered an early exit in the Australian Open, they secured a victory at the French Open. In their opening match, they defeated Enzo Couacaud and Arthur Rinderknech of France with a convincing score of 6-3, 6-2. In the following round, they put up a strong fight but were ultimately defeated (4-6, 5-7) by the ninth-seeded duo of Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. Among other Indian players, Rohan Bopanna is also participating in Wimbledon 2023.
Seeded sixth, Rohan Bopanna of India and Matthew Ebden of Australia will face Argentina’s Guillermo Duran and Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the opening round of Wimbledon 2023.
