US Open 2023: Maria Sakkari smelled marijuana during upset loss

US Open 2023 tennis player Maria Sakkari said she smelled marijuana during upset loss. Sakkari, ranked No. 8 player in the field, fell in straight sets to Rebeka Masarova.

Sakkari fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, but it was a match that she showed up to be in full control of from the starting. She was driving 4-1 on Court 17 against Masarova, but Sakkari said she noticed it from the starting.

The Grecian said she said noticing pot to the chair umpire amid a changeover within the match.

In any case, in spite of noticing marijuana amid her match, Sakkari did not make any pardons with respect to her play.

Sakkari said.

“You don’t really think about it, because all you care is just to win the match. I smelled it, but that was it. Like, it wasn’t something that I paid attention to.”

She continued, Sometimes you smell food, sometimes you smell cigarettes, sometimes you smell weed. I mean, it’s something we cannot control, because we’re in an open space. There’s a park behind. People can do whatever they want.

Whereas it may not have bothered Sakkari, players like Nick Kyrgios have too complained within the past for restorative reasons.

During a match final year, Kyrgios specified noticing marijuana, and since he is asthmatic, he did not accept breathing in it was great for him, particularly on the court.

Sakkari went through her third straight first-round exit in a Grand Slam Tournament.

Just final year, Sakkari was positioned as high as No. 3 within the world, making her the highest-ranked Greek player in history nearby men’s standout Stefanos Tsitsipas.
