Marketa Vondrousova made history at Wimbledon on Thursday, becoming the first unseeded women’s finalist at the tournament since Billie Jean King in 1963. The 24-year-old Czech player defeated Elina Svitolina, a 76th-ranked unseeded player who had returned to the tour from maternity leave just three months ago, 6-3, 6-3.
The match was close until the 3-all mark in the first set, when Svitolina’s level began to dip and Vondrousova’s rose. Vondrousova took the first set and led 4-0 in the second set before Svitolina made a brief comeback. However, Vondrousova held on to win the match, sealing the victory with a forehand winner down the line.
Vondrousova’s victory is a remarkable achievement, given that she missed much of last season because of an operation on her left wrist. However, she has now returned to the top of her game and is back in the spotlight of a Grand Slam final.

In the final, Vondrousova will face either Aryna Sabalenka or Ons Jabeur. Sabalenka is the second seed, while Jabeur is the sixth seed. Both players are in good form, but Vondrousova will be the underdog. However, she has already shown that she is capable of beating top-ranked players, and she will be confident of winning her first Grand Slam title.
The final will be played on Saturday, and it is sure to be a close and exciting match. Vondrousova will be looking to make history by becoming the first unseeded women’s champion at Wimbledon since 1963.
