Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri once again demonstrated his knack for clutch performances, scoring a spectacular equalizer in their 1-1 draw with Scotland at Euro 2024. Swiss manager Murat Yakin praised Shaqiri as a “special player for special moments,” and the Chicago Fire winger didn’t disappoint.
Shaqiri’s goal was a masterpiece. He intercepted a sloppy Scottish pass, surged towards the penalty area, and unleashed a thunderous shot into the top corner.
Yakin couldn’t contain his admiration. “He lives and breathes for moments like these,” Yakin said. “He really deserved that wonder goal. It was an unbelievably clinical strike, perfectly timed despite two defenders closing in.”
Shaqiri’s knack for delivering in big tournaments is well-known. The 32-year-old, who has graced clubs like Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and Liverpool, has now scored in each of the last three European Championships and World Cups.
“Shaq always gives everything in training,” said Swiss defender Manuel Akanji. “That goal was crucial, and not many players could have scored it.”
Switzerland’s prospects in Euro 2024 look promising. With four points from two games after beating Hungary in their opener, they are poised to advance to the knockout stage.
Even a loss against Germany, who lead Group A with six points, might not derail their progress.
The Swiss have built a reputation for strong performances in major tournaments, advancing past the group stage in four of the last five World Cups and reaching the quarterfinals of Euro 2020. As Shaqiri continues to deliver, Switzerland’s Euro 2024 campaign looks set to extend this impressive run.
