On Wednesday, Johan Oviedo, a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, achieved a remarkable milestone by pitching an “immaculate inning” during the fourth inning of the game against the Texas Rangers. An immaculate inning occurs when a pitcher strikes out all three batters in an inning using no more than nine pitches in total. Oviedo now joins the ranks of the 112 pitchers in Major League Baseball history who have accomplished this rare feat.
The most recent player to achieve an immaculate inning prior to Oviedo was Colin Holderman, a relief pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Holderman accomplished this feat on May 4 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Unfortunately, despite the impressive performances, the Pirates were defeated 3-2 in both games where the immaculate innings occurred.
In the previous year, 2022, a total of seven immaculate innings were thrown across Major League Baseball.
