Early in April, Thompson, a National Women’s Soccer League rookie for Angel City, was called up to the team to fill in for injured attacker Mallory Swanson in a match against Ireland. Thompson has been good this season. There is a mix of well-known players and newbies like Thompson on Vlatko Andonovski’s squad.
Andonovski’s said in a statement Wednesday;
“We are expecting the level of play at this World Cup to be the best it’s ever been, and all the teams must keep up with that growth. For years, we’ve been able to see first-hand where the game is going and that’s exciting. We are proud to have been one of the teams leading the way for women’s international soccer and I know the tournament will once again show the world how great these players are across all 32 teams.”
The veterans include Megan Rapinoe, a mainstay of the national team, who will be appearing in her fourth World Cup at the age of 37, and Alex Morgan, 33. They have already been in four World Cups. The 34-year-old defender Kelley O’Hara also secured a spot on the roster as a seasoned presence to fortify the backline in Becky Sauerbrunn’s absence. Who confirmed last week that she won’t be participating in the World Cup due to a nagging foot ailment.
Swanson, Sauerbrunn, and Catarina Macario will all be absent. Talented attacker Macario tore her anterior cruciate ligament last season while competing for Lyon in France. Sam Mewis, a midfielder, too has a persistent injury and was unable to participate in the World Cup.
