Marquette’s star guard, Tyler Kolek, sidelined for the final three regular-season games due to an oblique injury, is anticipated to make a timely return for the NCAA tournament, according to coach Shaka Smart.
While Kolek won’t feature in the Golden Eagles’ Big East tournament clash on Thursday, his status remains questionable for subsequent games. Coach Smart affirmed Kolek’s progress, stating, “He’s still day-to-day… but he’s close.” Smart emphasized Kolek’s active participation in practice sessions and ongoing treatment.
ESPN reports that Smart’s reassurance extends to Kolek’s readiness for the national tournament, stating to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “If today was the national championship game, he would be playing.”
The 6-foot-3 senior sustained the injury during a victory over Providence on Feb. 28, prompting his absence for the remainder of the regular season.
However, Kolek’s stellar performance throughout the season, earning him first-team All-Big East and second-team All-American honors, underscores his significance to Marquette’s lineup.
Kolek boasts remarkable stats, leading the nation in assists while maintaining an impressive scoring average. His impact was evident during Marquette’s eight-game winning streak in Big East play, where he averaged over 20 points and nearly 10 assists per game.
Kolek’s potential return for the NCAA tournament carries weight, potentially influencing Marquette’s seeding. Currently projected as a 2-seed, his presence could significantly bolster the team’s postseason prospects.
