In the opening game of the MHSAA Class 6A championship, Lewisburg coach Rusty Cagle showcased the depth and talent of his pitching staff. Cayden Baker, committed to Baylor, delivered a dominant performance, allowing only two hits and striking out five in 6⅔ innings. Vanderbilt commits Talon Haley sealed the 2-1 victory with a final strikeout. With additional arms like Louisiana commit Matthew Osteen and Air Force commit Gunner Gilmore in the bullpen, the Patriots demonstrated their pitching prowess.
Cagle praised Baker as a standout performer throughout the season and expressed confidence in his competitiveness. Despite Baker’s slight frustration at not finishing the game, Cagle emphasized the importance of the lefty-lefty matchup with Haley. The Patriots, with a record of 28-8, look to Haley to take the mound in Game 2 of the series.
Gulfport took an early lead with a sacrifice fly from Dawson Hall, but Lewisburg rallied back with a fielding error and a sacrifice fly from Gage Haley. Baker commended the team’s resilience, highlighting their ability to remain composed even when trailing by a run or two. Lewisburg’s experience in close playoff games has prepared them for such intense situations.
As they continue their pursuit of the championship, the Patriots remain focused on their “win ugly” mentality. They have grown accustomed to tight contests, with five of their six playoff games decided by one run. Despite their success, the team remains humble and determined, knowing they have been performing at this level all season.
