For the remainder of the season, the Texas Rangers will be without their $185 million player. According to the team general manager Chris Young, Jacob deGrom will have surgery to repair his UCL, which will keep him out of the MLB for the remainder of 2023 and most of 2024.
The team placed Jacob deGrom menacingly on the 60-day injured list on Monday, coinciding with the announcement that he would undergo an MRI to determine the severity of his injury. This came after he made six starts for the Rangers before being placed on the injured list due to elbow discomfort.
DeGrom has missed the last three seasons due to arm issues. While Jacob deGrom did make 12 starts in the MLB season that was cut short by the epidemic in 2020, he has not thrown more than 100 innings in a season since 2019. DeGrom, however, has missed a lot of time since then. Despite those setbacks, when healthy, he has consistently displayed the best pitching in baseball.
In his professional career, DeGrom has already undergone Tommy John surgery. Many believe that undergoing a second Tommy John surgery poses more risks compared to the initial procedure, considering Jacob deGrom was selected by the New York Mets in the ninth round of the 2010 MLB Draft. However, despite undergoing two Tommy John operations, Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi is currently enjoying his best professional campaign. Jameson Taillon, Daniel Hudson, and Mike Clevinger all undergone two Tommy John operations yet came back as productive players.
