After extensive negotiations, Francis Ngannou has successfully secured a highly lucrative MMA contract with the PFL. However, he also had his sights set on a potentially more lucrative boxing deal. Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn had hinted at the possibility, and now it seems that an official announcement is imminent. Sources indicate that a crossover fight between Ngannou and Tyson Fury. Which was initially teased in April 2022, is expected to be officially announced very soon.
Earlier this week, Fury hinted at a potential location for the fight, with significant financial backing from the Middle East. Ngannou’s journey to achieve his free agency and secure his contracts was not an easy one. He became the first UFC heavyweight champion to leave the promotion with the belt and escape the restrictive “champion’s clause.” Ngannou desired respect and control over his career. It appears that his bold move to bet on himself has paid off with deals from PFL and now Fury.
Fury said on the Out of Interest Podcast.
“We’ve had a lot of offers from the Middle East at the moment to host that fight over the summer, (The purse is) private information, but let’s say it’s 10, 20, 30, f—king 50 times the amount (UFC fighters make).”
Ngannou’s Bold Move: Asserting Independence and Securing Success
While some may not be thrilled about seeing Ngannou face significant disadvantages in a different sport for a big payday. It is a reflection of the current landscape of MMA purses. Rather than remaining underpaid in the UFC, where the promotion reportedly takes a large portion of the revenue. It is commendable that Ngannou took a different path, asserted his independence, and is likely to be handsomely rewarded.
Ngannou took significant risks to finalize his deals, including defending his belt against Ciryl Gane. While injured and facing efforts by the UFC to discredit him as he fought for his free agency. As the lineal UFC heavyweight champion, Ngannou bet on himself, and it seems he has already emerged as a winner. Regardless of one’s opinion on this exhibition match or his chances against Fury, Francis Ngannou has undoubtedly achieved success.
