According to NBC News, in a shocking and deeply unsettling development, former NFL player Sergio Brown, 35, has been reported missing, and his mother, 73-year-old Myrtle Brown, was found dead near a creek behind her home in Maywood, Illinois. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially ruled the death a homicide, citing multiple injuries due to an assault.
The Maywood Police Department issued a missing persons report for both Sergio and Myrtle Brown on Saturday after family members reported that they could not locate or contact either of them. A subsequent search led to the grim discovery of Myrtle Brown’s body, but Sergio Brown’s whereabouts remain unknown. Nick Brown, Sergio’s brother, took to Facebook to urge him to come home, stating, “I want him to know that I love you and please come home.”
Sheila Simmons, Myrtle Brown’s sister, expressed her concern and grief, stating that it was highly unusual for her sister not to answer her phone or respond to text messages. “We’re going to find out what happened because it’s not normal for my sister to not answer her phone, not to respond to text messages. People have been reaching out to her since Friday. No one was able to reach her,” Simmons told WGN-TV.
Sergio Brown, a Maywood native, had a seven-year career in the NFL, starting in 2010 with the New England Patriots. He also played for the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars before concluding his career with the Buffalo Bills in 2016. Brown appeared in 94 NFL games, including 15 starts. In 2016, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Miami.
The Maywood Police Department is urging anyone with information on Sergio Brown’s whereabouts to come forward and contact authorities immediately. The tragic circumstances surrounding the Brown family have left both the community and the nation in a state of shock, and the investigation is ongoing.
