Former Lions cornerback Cameron Sutton surrenders to authorities after weeks-long evasion following a domestic violence warrant.
Sutton, released by Detroit on March 21, turned himself in to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday night, closing the search initiated after a reported domestic incident on March 7.
Sheriff Chad Chronister emphasized the gravity of domestic violence, stating that no one is exempt from the law. The victim’s identity remains undisclosed. Sutton faces charges of domestic battery by strangulation, a third-degree felony carrying a maximum five-year prison term.

Lions president Rod Wood disclosed the team’s discovery of the warrant coincided with public awareness. Despite being at the team facility, Sutton’s presence was unexpected. The Lions promptly released him on March 21.
Sutton, having signed a lucrative three-year, $33 million deal with Detroit a year earlier, contributed significantly during the 2023 season, including an NFC Championship appearance. His departure leaves a void in the Lions’ defense, with the seasoned player due $12.7 million in 2024, slated to partner with recent acquisition Carlton Davis at corner.
