Conor McGregor, known as one of the UFC’s most prominent stars and a highly skilled MMA fighter, is contemplating a move away from the UFC and the sport of Mixed Martial Arts as a whole. McGregor has expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of MMA, describing it as ‘boring’ and is now exploring alternative options. Recent reports from The Sun suggest that he is interested in pursuing bare-knuckle boxing.
While bare-knuckle boxing was once considered a niche event with limited mainstream appeal, it gained significant popularity in the entertainment industry in 2023. The raw and brutal nature of this combat sport has attracted attention, and now even notable figures like McGregor are considering entering the fray.
During an interview with Ariel Helwani and Matchroom Boxing, McGregor revealed his willingness to participate in bare-knuckle boxing. He expressed his belief that boxing and MMA can often become dull and uneventful. In contrast, bare-knuckle boxing, with its high potential for cuts and bloodshed even from a single jab, guarantees an exciting spectacle. McGregor emphasized that such fights are never boring, as even a simple exchange of jabs can create a sense of urgency and captivate the audience.
While McGregor has not competed in the octagon since his defeat to Dustin Poirier in 2021, he has been occupied with various professional commitments. Currently, he is serving as a coach on the 31st season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter.’ However, it has been almost two years since his last MMA fight, marking the second-longest period of inactivity in his career. Despite this, McGregor is expected to make his return in December, facing Michael Chandler in a welterweight bout.
The future remains uncertain for McGregor as he explores new avenues beyond the UFC. His interest in bare-knuckle boxing highlights his desire for a fresh challenge and the opportunity to engage in a more thrilling and unpredictable form of combat sport.
