Cleveland Brown to pursue reunion with Kareem Hunt following injury to Nick Chubb

On Tuesday, Hunt and the Browns held a meeting to discuss their potential reunion, a move prompted by the Cleveland Browns’ running back crisis. This crisis emerged after Nick Chubb suffered a season-ending knee injury during a Monday night game in Pittsburgh. Chubb, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, won’t be available until 2024, leaving the Browns in need of a replacement. One option under consideration is a trade with the Los Angeles Rams for Cam Akers, who appears to be out of favor with his current team. However, a more familiar choice is Kareem Hunt, a former Cleveland Brown who is currently a free agent and awaiting a potential call from Cleveland to step in as Chubb’s replacement.

The Browns had initially released Hunt partly due to concerns about his declining foot speed, but with Chubb sidelined for the season, they may reconsider turning to Hunt for depth at the running back position.

Kareem Hunt’s Performance Decline in 2022

In 2022, Hunt’s performance dipped with a career-low average of 3.8 yards per carry, following a season in which he rushed for 386 yards and scored five touchdowns in just eight games. Hunt has never quite replicated his standout rookie season in 2017 when he rushed for 1,327 yards and scored eight touchdowns while with the Kansas City Chiefs. Notably, he was released after the 2018 season due to a well-publicized incident of assault against a woman.

The Browns appear poised to move ahead with Jerome Ford as their primary running back, with second-year player Pierre Strong currently serving as the backup. Ford demonstrated his abilities in a Monday night game against the Steelers, where he rushed for an impressive 106 yards on 16 carries.

If the Browns opt not to bring back Hunt, they might explore the possibility of trading for Akers, who has fallen out of favor with the Los Angeles Rams, as evidenced by his placement on the inactive list prior to their Week 2 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
