Sam Merrill of the Cleveland Cavaliers has rewritten the team’s history books, breaking Donyell Marshall’s franchise record for most bench three-pointers in a season during Wednesday night’s game against the Charlotte Hornets.
Merrill, known for his sharpshooting prowess off the bench, has been a standout performer for the Cavaliers this season. In his 54 games played so far, the 27-year-old guard has been delivering career-best statistics, averaging 8.0 points, 2.4 three-pointers, 2.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 0.1 blocks per game.
Against the Hornets, Merrill wasted no time making an impact. In just under five minutes of play in the first quarter, he went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, tying the game-high with nine points.

But it was in the second quarter where history was made. With 9:18 left on the clock, Merrill sank his fourth consecutive three-pointer of the game, breaking Marshall’s previous record of 128 bench three-pointers set back in the 2005-06 season.
By halftime, Merrill had amassed 14 points, shooting an impressive 4-for-5 from three-point range and contributing to the Cavaliers’ outstanding 61.9% three-point shooting performance in the first half.
While Merrill has primarily made his mark coming off the bench, he has also demonstrated his long-range shooting ability in a starting role earlier this season against the Boston Celtics, where he knocked down two three-pointers in a single game.
