Carlos Alcaraz, ATP tour the current world number one in tennis, expressed his confidence in eventually competing in Saudi Arabia and stated that the country has the capacity to host numerous tournaments. This comes as the ATP Tour has initiated discussions about a potential partnership with Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), regarding various projects such as infrastructure, events, and technology investment. ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi emphasized the importance of any potential investors respecting the sport’s history and collaborating with existing stakeholders. Alcaraz believes that Saudi Arabia possesses the capability to host multiple tournaments and expressed his certainty in playing there in the future.
Critics have raised concerns about the PIF’s role in enhancing the country’s reputation amidst criticism of its human rights record. Saudi Arabia has consistently denied allegations of human rights abuses, asserting that its laws prioritize national security. While Saudi Arabia has not yet hosted an ATP tournament, prominent players like Daniil Medvedev and Stan Wawrinka have participated in the Diriyah Cup exhibition event, which recently completed its second edition.
The discussions regarding a potential partnership between the ATP and Saudi Arabia come after the resolution of a two-year dispute between the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit, PGA Tour, and DP World Tour. The entities announced their merger and the formation of a unified commercial entity. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia has made substantial investments in soccer, Formula One, and boxing. Earlier this year, there were reports of Jeddah being one of the bidders for the ATP’s Next Gen Finals, a tournament showcasing the top Under-21 players.
