Bordeaux won’t be promoted to France’s Ligue 1 next season as Bordeaux loses chance for Ligue 1 promotion due to result of supporter behavior’s during the team’s home match against Rodez on June 2.
Buades’ 22nd-minute goal gave Rodez a 1-0 advantage in the season’s final Ligue 2 match. A Bordeaux supporter came out of the crowd and shoved Buades to the ground as the team celebrated its lead.
Following the push, the match’s official referee put the game on hold while Buades received medical attention. His concussion was eventually identified as the cause.
Bordeaux was relegated to Ligue 2 after finishing last in Ligue 1. Prior to the season, the franchise faced financial issues and underwent administration before being sold. As a result, Metz will be promoted to Ligue 1 for the 2023–24 season. To secure the second promotion slot, Bordeaux needed to outperform Metz in the final weekend, but Metz’s 3-2 victory against Bastia secured their promotion with 72 points and a +28 goal difference.
Bordeaux now has 69 points and a +24 goal difference for the remainder of the campaign. If it had defeated Rodez and amassed a higher goal difference than Metz, it would have scored promotion.
Bordeaux criticized the ruling as “incomprehensible and disproportionate” based on the facts and case law. The team will also face a point deduction at the start of the 2023-24 Ligue 2 season and the closure of their south stand supporters’ section for the first two home games.
Following their last-place finish in Ligue 1 for the 2021-22 season, Bordeaux was relegated to Ligue 2. Prior to that season, the franchise faced financial issues, leading to the team being placed under administration and subsequently sold. In 2009, it most recently won the Ligue 1 championship.
