A new bowl game will be introduced by the Big 12 conference in Mexico.
According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, the Big 12 has begun investigating the possibility of holding a bowl game in Monterrey, Mexico. The match, which would begin after the 2026 season, is only the most recent illustration of the league’s efforts to play in Mexico.
It is unknown where in Monterrey the Big 12 will host the bowl or which other league will send a squad to compete against the conference. The major football stadium in the city, Estadio BBVA, is where C.F. Monterrey plays in La Liga MX. The stadium, was inaugurated in 2015, has a capacity of roughly 53,500. The stadium and the city will both host the World Cup in 2026 as part of a joint effort with the United States and Canada.
It would be only the second bowl game ever played outside of the US. Nassau hosts the Bahamas Bowl each year. Both the Bacardi Bowl in Cuba and the Toronto-based International Bowl have been abolished.
In the upcoming years, the Big 12 will host a number of games in Mexico. In Mexico City in 2024, the men’s and women’s basketball teams from Kansas and Houston will square off against one another. Houston will formally join the conference later this summer along with UCF, BYU, and Cincinnati. In the near future, Thamel claims that Big 12 teams will also compete against regional Mexican clubs in exhibition baseball and women’s soccer games.
